Davison Makes A Monster Comeback

Two-time Bathurst winner Will Davison will become a Monster man at Mount Panorama.

He will be the super-sub when he joins Cam Waters in the Monster Energy-backed Ford Mustang as the replacement for Alex Premat, who is stranded in the USA by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The other Tickford team pairings will see James Moffat with Jack Le Brocq in the SuperCheap car and Michael Caruso with Lee Holdsworth in the Truck Assist Mustang.

James Courtney has already announced that he will be be partnered by teenager Broc Feeney, who is young enough to be the 40-year-old’s son, in the Boost Mobile Mustang.

Confirmation of the Bathurst driver pairings has been delayed and complicated by the death of Davison’s father-in-law in Perth.

As a result, he and his wife Riana are serving a two-week quarantine before the family farewell and then the trip to Darwin for the upcoming Supercars double-header.

“Will is out of reach. He is rightly looking after his wife,” Tickford team boss, Tim Edwards, tells Race News.

“He is taking personal time. He is currently stuck in Perth because he is isolating for the funeral of Riana’s dad.”

Edwards is still unwilling to confirm exact details of the Tickford driver pairings for Bathurst, even though Race News first broke news of Davison’s return to Tickford on July 15.

“We have a plan, but it’s not all locked away,” he says.

“We’re closer to it, but we’re not there yet. Given the situation with Will, it’s not the right time to be making any announcements.

“I’d rather him focus on his wife and family at the moment.”

But Edwards does confirm that Premat will be a non-starter for Bathurst 2020 because of the insurmountable hurdles in him travelling to Australia from his home in Las Vegas for the race.

Premat had driven the Monster Mustang during the pre-season Supercars test at The Bend in South Australia and was looking forward to his new ride.

“We are still very hopeful that we will be doing something with Alex in the long term but, for all the obvious reasons, this year wasn’t an option,” he says.

Without making any official announcement, Edwards drops strong hints about the pairings for the other two Mustangs.

“SuperCheap love Moff. It’s the logical thing to do,” he says of Moffat joining Le Brocq to continue his time as a Tickford racer.

“By a process of elimination, it would be fair to say it would be Caruso with Lee. They have driven together before. There are lots of good things about that, including their height.”
