Chinese Grand Prix In Doubt

China is the the shaky new race on the 2020 Grand Prix calendar.

Despite the confirmation of the two additions to this year’s World Championship schedule, in Italy and Russia, there is still plenty of uncertainty and that now includes the Chinese Grand Prix.

There is also nothing official yet to follow rumours of a Portuguese Grand Prix Prix on the Portimao circuit, but this could be a delay while the FIA decides if there will be one or two events at the circuit in the Algarve region.

Confirmation of the highly-anticipated race at the Mugello circuit includes the name of the race, which will be the Tuscan Grand Prix, to be officially known as the Gran Premio della Toscana Ferrari 1000 to commemorate the 1000th F1 start for the iconic Italian team. It will be held on the weekend after Monza, September 13, with the Russian race at Sochi on September 27.

“We had great start to our season in Austria last weekend and we are increasingly confident in our plans to race throughout the remainder of 2020,” says Chase Carey of Liberty Media.

“The Russian Grand Prix is a major moment in our season, and we are looking forward to being back in Sochi in September. We are equally excited to see Formula 1 race for the first time at Mugello, an occasion that will mark Ferrari’s 1000th Grand Prix. Both races will be a huge boost for fans with more announcements on the next races in our calendar coming in the weeks ahead.”

The decision on Portugal could turn on China, as uncertainty grows during a second wave of coronavirus infections in parts of the country.

The Chinese government will not be allowing any international events in the country, apart from the trials for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, for the rest of the year.

The news comes from the country’s General Administration of Sport, the government agency responsible for all sporting activities in China.
