DOWNSHIFTING: Andrew Miedecke

When he was young he was called 'Mad Andy' and he deserved the nickname as he skidded and skidded through open-wheeler racing against rivals including John Bowe and Larry Perkins. Then came many years of top-class touring car driving, as he also built a hugely-successful car business in Port Macquarie in NSW, before pivoting to become the Australian agent for Multimatic and Ford Performance.
1. What makes you laugh?
A really good joke. Clever funny, not slapstick.
2. What’s on your playlist?
Michael Ondara. He's folk soul music.
3. What was the last movie you saw?
I walked out, so let's not mention that one. My all time is the Blues Brothers.
4. One road, one car, one passenger?
Ford Focus RS, my girlfriend Sophie Knight, and the Sethana stage in Targa Tasmania near Cradle Mountain.
5. Your dream car - to park and admire?
I've got it. It's a Mercedes-AMG GT, a 2020 model. Just the right combination of cool and not outlandish or show-off.
6. Your greatest motorsport success?
I would have to say the day I was really 'on it' was when I was leading the Bathurst 1000 in 1987 as a privateer in my OXO Ford Sierra.
7. Your greatest failure?
I don't dwell on failures. Maybe my marriage.
8. Your one regret?
The decision I made that was definitely wrong was not to go with Fred Opert in 1977 to do Formula 3 in the UK. He was out with Keke Rosberg doing some racing and I must have shown some promise. I had the money but I thought I could do it myself.
9. What is your guilty pleasure?
I do love a sleep-in.
10. Which actor would play you in the movie of your life?
Nicholas Cage.
