Race Rap: Monday, June 2

Oscar as usual. Normal service was resumed in Formula One as Oscar Piastri beat home his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris after claiming pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix. Aussie Oscar led from the outset and, with Max Verstappen being penalised (again) for contact, it was Norris in second place and Charles Leclerc in third for Ferrari.

Tought times in Detroit. Kyle Kirkwood scored his second IndyCar win of season 2025 on the Detroit street course. There were incidents, cautions and even a Red Flag stoppage as the third-quickest qualifier finished ahead of Santino Ferruci and Colton Herta – with Will Power in fourth – to continue his run of successes on street courses.

Starting early. James Warburton is not officially on the clock at Supercars until late in July but he is already racing to to reconnect as he resumes his partnership with Shane Howard. Warburton has been calling drivers and visiting teams since his return as CEO was confirmed and people who have talked to him report to Race.news that he already has plans for significant changes to The Show.

Girl power in GT4. A pair of fast females, Summer Rintoule and Zoe Woods, raced to podium places on a torrid weekend of GT4 Australia Series racing in Queensland. Saturday was a wash-out for most crews, but sunny weather and a dry track worked on Sunday for Rintoule on the way to second in the Silver class with Jarrod Hughes in a Mercedes-AMG for Triple Eight as Woods paired with Nash Morris for third in a Porsche Cayman.

Jack is back. James Courtney is taking his race mate Jack Perkins along for his his final dance at Mount Panorama. The pair will pair for the last time in this year's enduros with Blanchard Racing before Courtney retires from full-time racing in the main game - with no plan to become an endurance co-driver.

Whoops ... again. There were crashes and carnage through the GT racing at Queensland Raceway, not helped by a rain-lashed Saturday. The biggest hit was suffered by Ryan Hansford, driving a Mustang for car owner David Schramm, in a battle for the GT4 lead on Saturday afternoon. The car was tapped into a spin and then collided with the concrete wall on pit straight, destroying the front end and ensuring a giant rebuild before the next GT4 round at Sandown in late July.

Brook is hot. Tim Brook swept the weekend at Sydney Motorsport with an unbeaten run through the third round of the TA2 Muscle Car Series. He was quickest in qualifying in his Chevrolet Camaro and had a tough time in the final race on Saturday night under lights but eventually got the job done ahead of Brock Paine.

Money run. The price of success is now set at $27.8 million. That's the price paid for Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2001 — known as The Crown Jewel — in an auction by RM Sotheby’s during the Monaco GP week.
