HILL CLIMBING THE PORSCHE TREE
Young Canberran Cam Hill had an unbeatable weekend of Carrera Cup racing at The Bend.
Hill now has a solid lead in this year’s series, even though his family team is battling against the heavyweights from Sonic and McAlrea Racing in 2021.
He now has a streak of five straight victories, and three round wins, to sit nearly 100 points clear of second-placed David Wall in this year’s Cup standings.
TEAM CHANGE HELPS DOOHAN
Switching from the under-performing HWA outfit to Trident has given Jack Doohan an instant boost in the FIA Formula 3 championship.
Doohan scored his first front-row start and his first F3 podium in the opening leg of this year’s series in Spain.
The weird procedure for F3 racing, including a partially-reversed grid for one of the three legs, means he is only sitting fifth on points after a poor start to the first race of the Barcelona F1 weekend.
The other Aussie in F3 this year, Calan Williams, sits 17th in the standings with Jenzer Motorsport but is yet to open his score.
MONACO FALLS TO FORMULA E
Reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa from the DS Techcheetah squad was the big winner when Formula E raced for the first time on the iconic Monaco Grand Prix course.
A last-lap lunge gave him the win in a hectic feature race but it’s Robert Frijns who leads the battery-electric series at the halfway point of the season with the Envision Virgin Racing team.
In the teams’ championship, Mercedes-EQ continues on top.
HYUNDAI RE-SIGNS ITS STARS
World champion Ott Tanak and his team-mate Thierry Neuville will continue to lead Hyundai in the World Rally Championship.
The team has just renewed their deals for 2022 and beyond on what is described as “multi-year” contracts.
Crucially, the extensions mean Tanak and Neuville will continue with Hyundai through development of the upcoming Rally1 car as the WRC moves into a new hybrid era.
NORMAL SERVICE IN GT AT THE BEND
Garth Tander and Sam Shahin, the circuit owner, did the job again in the latest leg of the World Challenge Australia at The Bend.
No-one could touch Nissan GT-R driver Brett Hobson in the wet one-hour race on Saturday in SA, but Tander and Shahin were unbeatable on Sunday despite a pitlane penalty.
They continue to lead the World Challenge standings ahead of the final sprint race of the season at Sandown in Melbourne in September.
